Salty slush damages leather, causing swelling and lumps. Wipe salt crust off with vinegar and apply shoe cream.

Thanks for the tip about vinegar -- it cleaned up the salt stains on my shoes in no time. A quick coat of polish after they dried and they looked as good as new.
